SUNKEN TREASURE

Author: Gail Gibbons

Publisher: Thomas Y. Crowell (pb. Harper & Row Trophy)

Description: An old treasure map leads LeVar on an exciting treasure hunt at **Pirates Cove** in California. Inspired by Sunken Treasure by Gail Gibbons, read by Robert Morse, he uses every device known to man to find a treasure, including a trusty bloodhound. Viewers also meet Dr. Robert Ballard of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution of Massachusetts, who, by using science and technology, located and explored the most famous shipwreck in history--the Titanic.

Activity Suggestion: Have the students create their own authentic treasure map which will lead to a favorite place on the playground or in a similar park (e.g. a special tree, their favorite swing, a fountain, their secret fort, etc.) Find sample maps (or illustrations of them) to use as models and create distressed paper by staining white butcher paper with tea. Use this paper for drawing a detailed map, and finish it by curling the edges with a pencil.
