KNOTS ON A COUNTING ROPE

Author: Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault

Illustrator: Ted Rand

Publisher: Henry Holt and Co., Inc.

Description: It's a test of LeVar's courage when he chooses to camp out all night alone in the wilderness. He is inspired by the book, KNOTS ON A COUNTING ROPE, a Native American tale about a young boy's emerging confidence facing his greatest challenge--his blindness. Viewers will also be inspired by a segment featuring Bree Walker, a TV reporter who overcame the obstacle of physical deformity.

Activity Suggestion: Storytelling is one of the oldest forms of communication. Every culture has special stories that are handed down from generation to generation. Ask three volunteers to retell the story of KNOTS ON A COUNTING ROPE with the first telling the beginning, the second the middle and the third the ending. Review the story with the entire class to see if any part was left out.
